The weirdness of trying to find work, and the pandemic ceasing a lot of work in my regular employment field of show and set design, has been interesting to navigate. To keep it all in the same creative arena with a few forays into my own weirdness (baking, camping, music playing), I draw and sketch a lot. You will see more of that in my recent submissions. Gosh. I love to draw and paint!

We as theatre artists have been beaten-up by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the politics of safely reopening our venues and managing our livelihoods. This month's journal will celebrate the members who have recently joined us as a reminder that we create beautiful art.

Ghost

GOST by tkorolevadesign - Tatiana Koroleva is a fabulous example of what our newest members are doing. Tatiana Koroleva is a New York based set and costume designer, illustrator, and graphic designer, originally from Saint-Petersburg, Russia, who has worked both nationally and internationally. She has created set and costume design for critically acclaimed theatre productions, dance, and vocal ensembles. Her costumes appeared at the cultural programs of Sochi Olympic Games 2014 and Astana Expo 2017.

"These were meant to be visuals to give an idea of what we wanted costumes to look like, as we mainly sourced from within the production itself.  Some designs ended up differing from the final show as a result.  Out of all of these, I loved the Salon costumes the most. Since the beginning of January, I was a props designer for a community production of Chicago: The Musical in a club at my university, after we successfully secured the rights.   We had 68 individuals involved who worked for months honing this production solely on a volunteer basis - with cast members hosting extra rehearsals to practice dance routines, crew commuting for an hour to work on sets or build handmade props and costumes, and band hosting sitzprobes and regular rehearsals.  A lot of us were really excited because we were the first in our regional area to ever succeed in getting the rights for this show, to my knowledge.  Unfortunately, because of current events, our show had to be cancelled a week before putting it on. Children's Theatre Roald Dahl Set Design

This one BY Thrushblaze gives me hope - it is for children's theatre, and I hope the production was not cancelled! Thrushblaze says, "Hello, I'm a young aspiring artist. My favourite things to draw are cats and random patterns. I also enjoy making cards out of colour paper, felt, and sometimes little extra materials."

With all of our industry not participating in live entertainment right now, we find our way to celebrate online versions creating in our areas of theatre. Live theatre. Now is a great time to hone those skills, and be ready for the eventual opening up of live entertainment with even more design and technology panache than you have now. Learn a new program, practice drawing every day. Complete that passion project that will show off your new model making skills. Make that fabulous hat you've been putting off. Just do it. Practice now for the fabulous opening later. And remember to submit your work to our strong TheatreArtists group! We want to celebrate with you!

Hello TheatreArtists! Many of our members are gearing up for summer stock theatre work. It is always a great portfolio building experience. Where are our members working? What shows do you get to build or design? I'm involved with The Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre this summer. We are doing Newsies, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, The Marriage of Figaro, Master Class, and Bravo, Caruso. Tell us what you are doing! Let's celebrate our work here.
